Creating Memories: A Family's DIY Moroccan Tile Tabletop Project

At the end of 2022, I had the pleasure of finishing the year by assisting a lovely family with a delightful DIY project. There's something truly special about having a cozy corner in your yard where you can relax, have tea, or enjoy a game of Monopoly with your loved ones.

In this project, the family had a rock stump intended to be used as a table, but it needed a new tabletop. The client chose beautiful Moroccan-style tiles for the project, and the whole family was excited to get involved, especially the mom and kids who were eager to get their hands dirty.

After taking some measurements from my first visit, I gathered a few materials to help with constructing the formwork. A few days later, I headed back with the materials as well as some tools for concrete works. The formwork was fixed carefully on top of the stump and was ready for the concrete.

Together, we mixed cement and poured it into the formwork. It needed a day of two to dry. The kids were asked to monitor for any possible cracks if ever it dried up too fast in the sun.

They did a fine job.

Once the concrete was set, I came back for another session of fun DIY. I introduced the kids to some tools as well as some basic safety precautions.

Tiling glue was prepared and we carefully laid the tiles according to a layout which the family chose.

It was a wonderful experience watching the family come together and take pride in their work, transforming the rock stump into a charming and functional table. The end result was a stunning tabletop that added character and functionality to their outdoor space.

Projects like these remind me of the joy and satisfaction that come from working with others to create something beautiful and meaningful. It was a perfect way to wrap up the year, helping a family enhance their home and create lasting memories in the process.
